Nice Jewish boy with chopsticks skills.

Redfarm’s owner and unofficial “Jews love Chinese food” spokesperson Ed Schoenfeld confirms his Upper West Side expansion dreams and describes what it was like to be a Jewish guy living in a Chinese world, back when he was a host at four-star Uncle Tai’s Hunan Yuan. “At one point, a prominent Chinese restaurateur asked Schoenfeld to drive around with him and point out all the Jewish neighborhoods — targets for an expanding empire of Szechuan restaurants,” reports the Forward. Also, bad tippers were called jautaai, which means Jew in Cantonese.” Obviously Schoenfeld is pretty hard to offend. [Forward]

A taco adventure.

A group of Dumbo taco junkies (taconnoisseurs?) have launched Taco Finder, an app to locate tacos though a chaselike experience. “We wanted to make going out for tacos into an adventure,” senior designer Valerie Gnaedig says. Directions to various taco dreamlands are provided via arrows, rather than instructions, getting margarita-drinking patrons dizzy before they even get drunk. [Brooklyn Paper]

From Kosher meat to Kobe beef, patients can customize their menus.

It’s a menu that could easily be from any high-end bistro, but instead, it’s lunch on the penthouse floor of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital’s Weill Cornell Medical Center, one of the newest wings devoted to very rich patients who want the best of everything, including their cuts of meat and blackberry gelato. One fussy family recalls abandoning the regular patients’ “inedible” food for the joy of the “mushroom risotto with heirloom tomatoes”; another raves of the Colorado rack of lamb. Well, that’s one way to feel better, but it’s not going to agree with everyone … [NYT]

An Empire State of Violations.

40/40 gloriously reopened on Thursday, was temporarily closed by the Department of Health on Friday, and went right back to business by Friday night — albeit with a C grade hanging over its head. Inspectors found a lot of nastiness within the walls that just days ago enclosed A-Rod and Alicia Keys. Perishable food was left out at warm temperatures, “hot” food was left out on the counter, and here’s something pretty gangster: A worker was mixing salsa with his bare hands. [BlackBook]

• Frank Bruni nibbles on the Paula Deen debate by arguing that thin food writers eat the tiniest of portions and looking at Smart Chefs Stay Slim, a new book about chefs and the scale. [NYT]

• The eating habits of the Brits are being described at “lazy” and “ugly,” a stereotype that may or may not be exaggerated, considering a report that more than half their meals out are burgers or kebabs. [Guardian UK]

• Butchering is the new black; not only are vegans choosing careers around the cleaver, but eaters are interested in every bit of information they can obtain about the meat they consume. Which probably makes them severely annoying jerks, but is generally a good thing. [NPR]

• Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively are on an eating escapade in Nola, lapping up beignets at Café du Monde and ice cream at Creole Creamery, proving that New Orleans can turn even a Gossip Girl into a hungry girl. [People]

• Sous Style spends time with a sound engineer who swears by Slap Ya Mama Cajun seasoning and dreams of making a veggie burger for Ron Swanson. Why can’t all interview subjects be that cool? [SousStyle]
